Let me explain…

 

I first heard about the value of meditation a few years back and got excited by what it could give me.

You see I was going through a bit of a rough patch – life was stressful, I wasn’t sleeping well and I had difficulty concentrating and focusing at work. Honestly, work was all I seemed to do. I didn’t seem to have fun any more. It felt like I was on a downhill spiral and I wasn’t sure how I was going to pull myself out.

I thought it was something that yogi’s, “gurus” or enlightened people did? Surely it wasn’t something I, a “female westerner” could benefit from? I thought I would have to isolate myself from my family and friends and go sit on top of a mountain. This certainly was not something I wanted to do with my life….

So rather than writing off meditation, what I did instead was….

…I bought a few books about meditation. Actually I bought book after book. But to be honest with you I only read a few chapters. But the books did get me excited about starting to meditate. And off I would go and do it for a few days but then something would come up and I would just stop. You know what I mean? An important meeting that just can’t be changed… or somehow I would just not hear my alarm clock and therefore I wasn’t able to fit meditation in because the rest of my day was too busy.

To make matters worse….

Some of the books I read about mediation were really very useful but some just bogged me down in the details. I did learn that there were lots of different meditation techniques out there….. but the problem I then had was that I wasn’t sure which one was the best for me.

The other problem I also discovered was that I didn’t really know what I was trying to achieve with my meditation. Did my mind really need to go blank? Because when I tried to sit still and meditate, my mind just wandered off. I would think about what I had to do later that day at work or I would be writing a mental list of the groceries I had to pick up at store after work.

So what did I do next…..
